Project: Estimating LGBTIA populations in OECD member countries: A JBI Scoping Review

The project aims to compile and analyse quantitative data on the size of LGBTIA+ populations in OECD member states in a systematic way. The project will also examine the definitions on which these estimates are based, as well as the methodology used to collect the data. These findings are crucial for the evidence-based planning of support services, healthcare, and anti-discrimination measures.
This scoping review follows the methodology established by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and is conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The analysis includes studies and reports collected since 2000 from epidemiological, social science and statistical sources. The analysis covers 38 OECD member countries, focusing on national and regional data.
The study addresses two key questions:

  1. What proportion of the population belongs to each LGBTIA+ subgroup in the respective countries?
  2. What definitions and survey criteria underlie these estimates?

The results will be presented in tabular, visual and narrative form to support the work of academia, policymakers and queer communities with reliable, comparable data.
The project is funded by the Beratungsstelle Geschlechtliche Vielfalt e.V. (Gender Diversity Advice Centre) in Göppingen. Participating researchers work on a voluntary basis and are supported by activists and experts in an open peer review process.
