This project will conduct a scoping review of studies that have made estimates of LGBTIA populations.
The objective of this review is to compile available quantitative data on the population proportions of different LGBTIA populations in OECD member countries. In doing so, it aims to clarify which definitions of LGBTIA populations underlie each of these estimates.
Knowing the estimated size of LGBTIA subpopulations is important for monitoring LGBTIA health, discrimination and counselling needs, as well as the effects of supportive policies. The quality of estimates depends on the quality of population definitions and survey instruments and procedures.
Information sources that capture LGBTIA populations or LGBTIA subpopulations in terms of size are included. Two concepts are in focus: (1) the quantitative proportion of the LGBTIA population or LGBTIA subpopulations in the total population, and (2) the use of relevant definitions of LGBTIA populations or LGBTIA subpopulations for the sample survey. Context: Information sources on LGBTIA populations and subpopulations in OECD member countries will be used, including systematic reviews, epidemiological and social science studies, and statistical sources at national or regional level.
This review follows the JBI methodology for scoping reviews. The literature will be searched in MEDLINE (OvidSP), JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, SocINDEX, Sociological Abstracts, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, WISO and in the online resources of national or regional statistical institutions as well as in Google Scholar. Full articles are retrieved if their title or abstract meets the inclusion criteria. Results are presented in tabular, visual and narrative form.
